Blown in cellulose is a highly effective, environmentally friendly insulation solution. Made from recycled newspaper and treated with borate for fire retardancy, the even distribution of blown in cellulose insulation makes for a high performance insulation that has come into increasing favor among green builders and building energy efficiency experts.

Home Energy Medics is an award-winning cellulose insulation installer serving the greater Metro DC area, including parts of Northern Virginia and Maryland. If you’re looking to make your home more comfortable, healthy, and energy efficient, reach out today!

WHAT IS CELLULOSE INSULATION?

Cellulose insulation is made primarily from recycled paper materials, such as newspapers, which are treated with fire retardants for safety. The insulation is typically delivered in a loose, fibrous form.

For installation, professionals use a specialized blowing machine that aerates the cellulose fibers and then sprays them into the designated areas. This method allows the insulation to be installed in one of two ways: densely packed or loose filled. Cellulose can be installed into wall cavities, attic spaces, and other hard-to-reach areas, effectively filling gaps and voids.

THE BENEFITS OF CELLULOSE INSULATION

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

Cellulose is made from recycled newspaper, so it's an eco-friendly insulation solution. You can also rest assured that it's a safe product to have in your house—no formaldehyde, no harmful chemicals.

CONSISTENT HIGH PERFORMANCE

Because cellulose is blown into cavities as small particles rather than installed in batt form, it's far less likely to have the gaps and air leaks around the edges that other types of insulation can suffer from. This means that you get consistent high performance for a cozier, more energy efficient home.

FIRE RETARDANT

Cellulose is treated with the flame retardant borate, which is highly effective at slowing down the spread of fires. A house that is insulated with blown in cellulose insulation is safer from a fire-hazard standpoint than an uninsulated house. Borate is also an effective pest deterrent.

THE IMPORTANCE OF AIR SEALING WHEN INSTALLING CELLULOSE INSULATION

Cellulose insulation is great at reducing the transfer of heat through the building materials that make up your home, but it’s most effective when paired with air sealing. Air sealing closes up holes and gaps that allow air to enter and exit your house. Air movement can reduce the effectiveness of cellulose insulation, but together the two work as a powerful barrier that protects your home from the outdoor elements year-round!

SEE IF YOUR HOME COULD BENEFIT FROM NEW INSULATION WITH A HOME ENERGY AUDIT

Before you go upgrading your home’s insulation and air sealing, it’s smart to have a home energy audit conducted first. At Home Energy Medics, all of our home improvement work starts with an audit. Audits involve a visual inspection of your house along with the use of building science equipment like blower doors and infrared cameras to test the insulation levels and air leakage in your home.

With the results of your audit, you’ll have a better understanding of where the weak points in your home are, and how much you stand to benefit from upgrades like new insulation and air sealing, heating and cooling upgrades, and other energy efficiency improvements.

SAVE ON CELLULOSE INSULATION INSTALLATION WITH TAX CREDITS AND REBATES

Cellulose insulation installation qualifies for several incentives that make this home upgrade more affordable, including:

  • Up to $1,200 in federal tax credits that covers cellulose insulation materials, energy audits, and more

  • Rebate programs available through local utility companies like Pepco, BGE, and Dominion Energy

Home Energy Medics will sit down with you to discuss the incentives that you qualify for, as well as the financing options available to help you make needed home improvements today.

Looking for Duct Sealing? Did you know...

There is a substantial amount of energy loss when your HVAC system works overtime to make up for leaks and gaps in your ductwork. In addition to increased energy bills, the unnecessary strain on your system can significantly shorten its lifespan or lead to costly repairs. Air duct leaks can also create indoor air quality issues by allowing dust, allergens, and other pollutants easy access to the air circulating through your home. Having properly sealed ducts keeps these pollutants out of the air you breathe and balances temperatures, leaving your home feeling more comfortable.
